Estate

our history

Bagnolungo was established in 2021 on volcanic soil in Maremma Toscana, right below the ancient city of Pitigliano.

After many years in the viticulture and hospitality business around the world, we realised this was the right place to put down our roots. We produce wine and extra virgin olive oil following the principles of sustainability and respecting nature.

terroir

The area around the estate looks like a high hill at 235mt a.s.l. surrounded by small streams that over the centuries have eroded the land drawing the landscape. Volcanic soils composed of loose tuff, pyroclastic material were deposited following the volcanic activities of the nearby lakes of Bolsena and Mezzano. Thirty kilometers separate us from the Argentario coast and Mount Amiata, with a Mediterranean climate characterized by gentle winds that cross the vineyards and the olive grove from east to west.

the vineyard

Our vineyard is located a few kilometers from Pitigliano, on a high hill surrounded by rivers and streams. The Bagnolungo and La Nova on one side, the Roiana on the other: all flow into the large basin of the Fiora river a few hundred meters away. The loose tuff of volcanic matrix of which the soil is composed favors the propagation of the roots towards the underground thermal water reserves, helping the plants to make up for the dry years. The vineyard, planted in 2007, is composed mainly of Aleatico and partly of Cabernet Sauvignon and Ciliegiolo, with north-west/south-east exposure, bred as a single guyot. For fertilisers and treatments we only use products permitted in organic farming.

olive groves

The olive grove is within walking distance from the house. More than two hundred trees spread over a little more than half a hectare, some recently planted but many planted over seventy years ago. The cultivars are the traditional varieties present in this corner of Tuscan Maremma: Leccino, Canino, Frantoio and Leccio del Corno. The management is totally manual, from pruning to harvesting. Fertilizations and treatments are reduced to a minimum and always following the principles of organic farming.
